Joe Strummer’s Birthday August 21
Joe Strummer’s Birthday is today
“I don’t have any other message than don’t forget that you’re alive”
We can never let today pass without remembering what a giant Joe Strummer was to Punk. Born John Graham Mellor in Ankara, Turkey on August 21 1952. It was his work with the Clash that brought him his greatest fame. The “Only Band That Matters” mixed raggae, ska, dub, funk and punk into something that was bigger than the sum of it parts.
The Clash also broadened punk in terms of their intelligent political lyrics, their musical experimentation and rebellious attitude which unfortunately ultimately led to Joe firing Mick Jones soon after kicking Topper Headon out of the band.
Joe did produce some fine music on his own and with the Mescaleros. He filled in for Shane MacGowan for a tour with the Pogues. Joe died on December 22, 2002 of and undiagnosed congenital heart defect. In 2003, the Clash was elected into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
